2025 Rio Grande/Rio Bravo Binational Symposium

Eng. Francisco X. Valdés participated in the 2025 Rio Grande/Rio Bravo Binational Symposium, held in McAllen, Texas, where he presented his team’s vision on “Agriculture and Municipal Reuse through Regenerative Irrigation” during the Basin Project Updates session.

In his presentation, the engineer highlighted the growing water demand in Mexico’s border region — and globally — emphasizing the urgent need to rethink food production systems in order to protect the environment and shared water resources.

As a proposed path forward, he introduced the regenerative irrigation model, an approach that promotes greater water-use efficiency, improves soil health, and supports the natural recharge of aquifers. This perspective was illustrated through the case study of Aquifer 835 in Chihuahua, where practices and results have been analyzed to demonstrate the potential of this model for agricultural regions facing water stress.

Eng. Valdés expressed his sincere appreciation to the Texas Water Foundation for the invitation, and especially to Colin McDonald, Director of Strategic Partnerships for the organization, for his key role in coordinating the event. He also highlighted the opportunity to reconnect with water sector leaders and long-standing colleagues, including Mario Mata Carrasco, Roque Martínez Amparán, John Beckham, Salvador López Córdova, Raúl Quiroga Álvarez, Carlos Rubinstein, Enrique Prunes, and Bobby Janecka.

His participation reaffirms Eng. Valdés’s commitment to advancing innovative solutions that strengthen water sustainability and agricultural resilience in the border region and beyond.
